Wontumi’s Arrest: NDC’s Desperate Attack on NPP’s Unity

A Targeted Assault on Chairman Wontumi

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) stands united in condemning the shocking arrest of our Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on May 27, 2025. This “Rambo-style” detention, executed with heavily armed operatives, is nothing short of a politically motivated assault by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to silence a fearless patriot and cripple our party’s resolve. Wontumi, a dedicated servant of the NPP and a proud Ghanaian, is being targeted for his bold ambition to lead our party as National Chairman and for his unwavering commitment to our cause.

The Facts: A Clear Case of Political Persecution

On May 27, 2025, Chairman Wontumi honored an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra, only to be ambushed and detained by EOCO without clear charges. This followed a failed raid on his Kumasi residence on May 23 by National Security and NIB operatives, which was thwarted by the vigilance of NPP supporters. The NDC has since intensified its vendetta, freezing Wontumi’s bank accounts and suspending his company, Akonta Mining, under baseless allegations of illegal mining. These actions are a calculated attempt to tarnish his reputation and derail his businesses, including Wontumi TV/Radio, simply because of his influence within the NPP and his vocal opposition to the NDC’s failed policies.

NPP’s Response: We Will Not Be Intimidated

The NPP rejects this blatant abuse of power. Our National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, and Communications Director, Richard Ahiagbah, have rightly called out the NDC’s tactics as a dangerous attack on democracy. On May 29, our Minority Caucus in Parliament staged a walkout to protest Wontumi’s detention, while former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia demanded transparency and adherence to the rule of law. We rallied at EOCO’s headquarters, joined by MPs and supporters, to show that the NPP will not bow to intimidation. Wontumi’s health scare during interrogation, requiring hospitalization, only underscores the inhumane treatment he has endured. Despite being granted bail of GHS50 million on May 28, the NDC’s punitive conditions have kept him in custody, a clear violation of justice.

The NDC’s Hypocrisy Exposed

The NDC’s claims of investigating alleged financial misconduct, including a COCOBOD contract and EXIM Bank dealings, are a smokescreen to distract Ghanaians from their unfulfilled promises, like the 24-hour economy. Wontumi, as a regional chairman, holds no government position that justifies this scrutiny. His only “crime” is his success as a businessman and his loyalty to the NPP’s vision for a prosperous Ghana. The NDC’s obsession with targeting our Ashanti stronghold, where Wontumi has tirelessly mobilized support, reveals their fear of our party’s enduring strength, even after the 2024 elections.

A Call to Action

We call on all NPP members and Ghanaians who cherish democracy to stand with Chairman Wontumi. This is not just an attack on one man but an assault on our party’s unity and the rights of every citizen. We remain committed to cooperating with lawful investigations but will fiercely resist political victimization. Join us in demanding justice for Wontumi using #FreeWontumi and support our fight to protect Ghana’s democratic values.
